Kennedy entered the dining room through the service door, her eyes taking in the loveliness of the room. The Captainâs Dinner was a long-standing tradition for the cruise line, harkening to the days of the companyâs first passenger ship, the Roja. Before he left, Bert shared that Emily Abbott, the great-granddaughter of the companyâs founder, had agreed to loan the exhibit the cruise lineâs dining room books. Each book documented the menu and contained a hand-written log of the events that had taken place each day. Kennedy secretly longed for that personalized history instead of the forms and documents they now sent in.
Because of the corporate officeâs push for the sail-away party, the Captainâs Dinner was moved to the second night of the cruise. While Kennedy understood the reasoning for the new event, she was disappointed, and her heart broke when she learned formal attire would no longer be required at dinner. She had always felt that holding the formal dinner on the first night set the tone for the cruise, giving it an air of sophistication and romance. She enjoyed watching the passengers morph from ordinary to extraordinary as women adorned in elegant gowns and shimmering jewelry glided on the arms of debonair men dressed in dinner jackets and tuxedos.
But while the passengers were not required to dress formally for the Captainâs Dinner, the dining room was still decked out in its finery, and Kennedy felt her heart leap. Tony had also been dismayed at the changes but had not relaxed his standards. The room glowed in the soft overhead lights, and napkins trimmed in oxford blue were fan-folded on the navy and gold-edged china plates that sat on ivory tablecloths as crystal glasses sparkled and cast rays of light on the walls. Catching a rose-colored reflection, Kennedyâs brow drew down as she looked at the object making the pinkish hue. Irritated, she scanned the room for Tony only to find him opening the heavy dining room doors. âToo late now,â she sighed as she saw the staff begin to escort passengers to their tables.
Taking her place at the podium beside Tony, she helped to seat passengers, and at one point, she saw Copper and Dirk sitting with several other attorneys and glided over to their table. âGentlemen,â she said as they scrambled to stand up. âYou look very handsome this evening.â
Dirk shot out the cuffs of his ivory dinner jacket. âI rather like my attire. In fact, I may begin wearing this getup to court.â He grinned at Kennedy. âDonât you think I look like a secret agent about to meet a man with some diabolical scheme to end the world?â
Before Kennedy could answer, Ari interrupted, pointing at Dirkâs hair, which he had pulled back into a low ponytail. âNot until you cut those black and gray tresses you are so fond of and start to look like a professional. Right now, you resemble a scraggly, aging hippie playing dress up.â
âOuch,â Dirk retorted, his hand over his heart. âBut just think of how much money Iâve saved over the years.
